Mandarin is one of the first luxury hotel chains to come out of Asia. Starting with a “Bang!” in 1963 with the opening of the Mandarin hotel in Hong Kong, the building would be the biggest in the city at the time of its opening. Fast forward a few years to 1974 and the Mandarin hotel would partially acquire the legendary Oriental Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand. As the company now considered the two hotels to be their “flagship” hotels, they opted to name their hotel group the “Mandarin Oriental” and thus a hospitality legend was born.
