Baklava Recipe

Baklava is a Middle Eastern dish that is sweet and usually enjoyed alongside tea and as a dessert. It is made from pastry layers that are filled with chopped nuts and held together by a syrup-sugar sauce.

Ingredients
  • 150g pealed almonds, chopped
  • 130g walnuts, finely chopped
  • 2tbsp sesame seeds
  • 2tbsp sugar
  • 500g strudel pastry (yufka filo pastry)
  • 100g melted butter
  • 3 1/2dl water
  • 350g sugar
  • 4tbsp lemon juice
  • 4tbsp liquid honey
  • 1 1/2tbsp rose water

    Step 1
    The filling: Mix the almonds, walnuts, sesame seeds and sugar.

    To shape: Unfold the pastry sheets and place 2 sheets of pastry in the tin. Brush the pastry with a little butter and repeat this 3 times. Then spread the nut filling on top and cover the filling with another 2 sheets of pastry. Brush the top of the pastry with butter and repeat these steps until there is no pastry sheets left. Cut the cake into diamond shaped pieces.

    Baking: In the lower half of the preheated oven (to 180 degrees), bake the Baklava for approx. 25 mins. Take the pastry out of the oven and put it on a tray.

    For the topping: Boil the water and sugar together and let it boil. Reduce the heat and let it transform into a thicker consistency for approx. 5 mins. Add the lemon juice, liquid honey and rose water and cook for an extra 5 mins. Pour the sugar syrup over the Baklava and leave to cool.
